Download robocode-s

Version 0.1.0, for Windows, Linux and macOS. Release notes · SHA256SUMS. New here? Start with Getting started.

Windows

Windows 10 or 11, x64.

Download the installer 17.9 MB

Installs for your user, without administrator rights, with a Start menu entry and an optional PATH entry.

Or the zip archive 23.5 MB: unpack it on an NTFS drive (the sandbox needs NTFS) and run robocode-s-gui.exe.

winget: winget install NickHofstede.robocode-s once it's accepted (submitted to winget-pkgs, in review).

Unsigned. The installer and the programs are not code-signed, so SmartScreen says "Windows protected your PC": choose "More info", then "Run anyway".

Linux

x86-64 or arm64, glibc 2.31 or newer (Debian 11, Ubuntu 20.04, Fedora 32, RHEL 9).

Debian, Ubuntu

sudo install -d -m 0755 /etc/apt/keyrings
curl -fsSL https://rumble.planethofstede.be/packages/robocode-s.gpg | sudo tee /etc/apt/keyrings/robocode-s.gpg >/dev/null
echo "deb [signed-by=/etc/apt/keyrings/robocode-s.gpg] https://rumble.planethofstede.be/packages/apt stable main" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/robocode-s.list
sudo apt update && sudo apt install robocode-s

Fedora, RHEL, Rocky

sudo curl -fsSL -o /etc/yum.repos.d/robocode-s.repo https://rumble.planethofstede.be/packages/robocode-s.repo
sudo dnf install robocode-s

Both repositories are signed, and apt upgrade or dnf upgrade brings later versions. Or install a downloaded file, which is not signature-checked:

Packagex86-64arm64
.debdownload 12.7 MBdownload 12.0 MB
.rpmdownload 13.6 MBdownload 12.7 MB
.tar.gzdownload 17.7 MBdownload 17.0 MB

sudo apt install ./robocode-s-0.1.0-linux-x86_64.deb or sudo dnf install ./robocode-s-0.1.0-linux-x86_64.rpm. The .tar.gz unpacks anywhere; run robocode-s-gui or robocode-s from it.

Unsigned. The programs are not code-signed. Linux doesn't warn, but a downloaded .deb, .rpm or .tar.gz isn't signature-checked: use the repositories above (signed), or check the file against SHA256SUMS.

macOS

Apple Silicon (arm64) or Intel (x86-64).

Download for Apple Silicon 17.8 MB

Download for Intel 18.5 MB

Open the .dmg and drag robocode-s.app to Applications. The command line is robocode-s.app/Contents/MacOS/robocode-s.

Homebrew

brew install --cask nhofsted/robocode-s/robocode-s

Installs the app and links robocode-s on the PATH; brew upgrade --cask robocode-s brings later versions. The cask clears the quarantine flag, so Gatekeeper doesn't stop it.

FileApple SiliconIntel
Disk image (.dmg)download 17.8 MBdownload 18.5 MB
App (.app.zip)download 16.7 MBdownload 17.3 MB
Archive (.tar.gz)download 16.6 MBdownload 17.2 MB

A double-clicked recording opens the window but not the recording yet: open it from the window (Open, or drop the file on it).

Unsigned. The app is not signed or notarized, so Gatekeeper refuses it after a download: right-click it and choose Open, or "Open Anyway" in System Settings, Privacy & Security. Or, once: xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/robocode-s.app.

Contribute battles to the rumble

The rumble runs on volunteers' computers, and robocode-s is the client. Install it from a package manager or a download above, sign in with GitHub once, and let it run:

robocode-s rumble login
robocode-s rumble run

login shows a code and opens GitHub in your browser. run fetches batches of battles, runs them and uploads the results until you press Ctrl+C (--parallel N sets how many battles run at once). The GUI does the same on its Rumble page: sign in, then switch Contribute on. Check the contributors list for your name, and your account for your counters.

sudo apt install robocode-s # Debian, Ubuntu, after adding the repository above
sudo dnf install robocode-s # Fedora, RHEL, Rocky, likewise
winget install NickHofstede.robocode-s # Windows, once accepted
brew install --cask nhofsted/robocode-s/robocode-s # macOS

Sandboxes. The rumble runs other people's robots, so the client runs them in a sandbox and refuses to contribute without one. Linux (Landlock and seccomp) and Windows (AppContainer) have one built in. macOS has none: install Docker, or pass --unsandboxed if you accept running robots with your user's rights.

Before you run it

  • First run downloads Java. The robots' Java runtime (about 50 MB) is fetched on first use into your user data folder, not into the installation.
  • Check a download against SHA256SUMS: sha256sum -c --ignore-missing SHA256SUMS.
  • Uninstalling leaves the data folder and the GUI's settings; delete them to remove everything.

Source and older versions are on GitHub. Next, write a robot with the IDE guide.
